MTEC is working with Puget Sound Energy, CellNet
Data Systems, Carrier Electronics and Silicon Energy to integrate
load control and AMR technologies. Home Comfort Control is a service
that enables utilities to work directly with customers to improve
management of peak energy demand while also providing customers
with two-way control of their home thermostats over the Internet.
The Home Comfort Control system the monitoring and control technologies
and expertise of CellNet Data Systems, Silicon Energy and Carrier
Electronics, a division of Carrier Corporation.
The two-way closed loop system works as follows:
The CellNet wireless AMR network provides constant energy consumption
information from participating customers. This network information
is delivered to and analyzed by Silicon Energy's software, created
specifically for utility load management. To better manager load
balances, a signal can be sent via the two-way CellNet wireless
network to the Carrier Electronics smart thermostats installed in
the homes of participating utility customers. The Carrier thermostat
will then adjust the home's temperature by two to six degrees for
a period of no more than four hours, in order to reduce overall
energy demand. The customer may manually override the adjustment
via the Carrier thermostat or via a secure Internet site should
he or she choose to do so.
The two-way thermostats also notify the utility
as to which specific customers are allowing their home thermostats
to be adjusted, as well as which homes have manually "opted out"
of the automatic thermostat adjustment. Future capabilities of the
system may include features such as interactive home energy management
via an Internet link, bill payment, extended absence or vacation
temperature monitoring, and home alarm system monitoring.
